How to give credit to scientists for their involvement in making data & samples available for sharing

LEARN cordially invites you to its end-of-Project Conference entitled 'Managing the Data Deluge : roles and responsibilities for your institution ' which will be held on Friday 5th May 2017 at Senate House, London.

The use and sharing of research data has the potential fundamentally to change the way research is undertaken and shared. Pervasive networks mean that researchers are able to collaborate and share not only their publications, but also the research data, which underpins them. The LEARN Conference is designed to encourage all stakeholders – researchers, research funders, publishers, research organisations and senior decision makers – to explore what their roles and responsibilities are in this fast-changing environment. The EU-funded LEARN project has produced a model Research Data Management policy, along with guidance, for implementation at institutional level.

...

The conference will be split into two sessions. The morning session will be devoted to formal presentations, whilst the afternoon slot will have breakout groups which will examine the outputs of the LEARN project and how they can be taken up by stakeholders.

  • Les outils de traitement et de visualisation de données ;
  • Les apports de la visualisation de données (la lutte contre la fraude, le terrorisme et la criminalité, etc.) ;
  • La data visualisation et l'analyse de données (l'analyse de sentiments, l'analyse de réseaux, l'analyse comportementale, etc.) ;
  • La data visualisation comme outil d'aide à la décision ;

“The road less travelled ?” Research data, careers and other pathways

...

Six years on from the first of these events, and six months on from the latter, how – and to what extent – have data career pathways matured in the last half-decade, and what might we expect from the next five to ten years ? As estimates of the numbers of data scientists that will be required to meet demand in the coming years become ever more extravagant, how well positioned is the academy to produce these, whether via formal qualifications or the development of existing staff ? How do we balance and reconcile the scholarly effort involved in research data management (and software, as Research Software Engineer matures as a profession) with career progression ? And how do we ensure we continue to address the concerns of different stakeholder groups, such as funders and publishers ? In short, how far have we come, where are we now, and what must we continue to plan for ?

Important Dates

Submission deadline : Friday, June 30, 2017
Notification of acceptance : Tuesday, August 15, 2017

Workshop Themes

  1. Research Data Management (RDM). NKOS welcomes presentations that focus on the knowledge organization issues related to controlled vocabularies, name authority, taxonomy, and other KOS to enable access to collections, e.g., in order to be able to replicate scientific results. What are the KOS requirements related to data storage and preservation ; and communication, coordination and collaboration to support librarian and researcher needs ?
  1. Aggregation. The objective of linked open data is to provide distributed access to vocabularies and content that uses vocabularies. Actually using vocabularies to aggregate distributed content is a special case that reconstructs collections that are now dispersed. Examples include Renaissance artist sketchbooks, natural history collections from enlightenment humanists, etc.
